Paradise Hut, Upper Baram River

Here you can witness the regeneration of the Rainforest in a small way; re-planted trees such as Belian (Ironwood), Meranti (Softwood) and Serangan (Hardwood/Teak) which for centuries have provided the raw materials for house building, bridges, furniture and farm implements.

"Paradise Hut" is built from these woods, all grown in the forest around the hut and formed by hand. Large Belian posts (virtually the whole tree!!) stand in the four corners of the house, strong circular branches of hardwood form the roof and wall beams and the whole house is enclosed in white Meranti planking. Apart from the tin roof, nothing is "man-made" or artificial. Outside are the water tanks and the kitchen area.

Amongst the rainforest trees are planted many fruit trees - the dreaded but incredibly popular Durian tree reaching a hundred feet tall, the small sweet "cat's eye" fruit, Longan berries, davai, mango, pangin, using and even rambutan fruit trees also abound. Of course many are seasonal but all require care year round.

A couple of nights here, sleeping on the soft wood floor with your own mosquito net and waking at dawn each day to see the forest shrouded in mist, hear the hornbills swooping from tree to tree and feeling the slight chill in the air, but with the certain knowledge that within an few hours the temperature will reach 28 degrees as usual in the jungle, and in places climb to 30 plus before the tropical thunderstorms form and produce the often daily downpour to cool off everything again - a true and everlasting circle of life and an experience not to be missed in a lifetime....
